Three practical checks before you commit. Say the name loudly in your yard and see whether it carries. Then say it next to your everyday cues, because a name that rhymes with "sit", "stay" or "no" will confuse a young dog. Finally, say it in the vet's waiting room in your head, and decide whether you still like it.

Teaching the name takes about a week. Say it once in a calm voice, mark the head turn, pay it with something good, then let the puppy go back to whatever it was doing.
