Accessibility

A shop that some people cannot use is not finished. This site is built to WCAG 2.2 AA, we test it against that standard, and if something here gets in your way we want to hear about it.

The standard we build to

Every page on lapphunddesigns.com is built to WCAG 2.2 AA, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines published by the W3C. It is the level most accessibility law around the world points at. Version 2.2 covers everything 2.1 asks for and adds newer criteria on top of it.

We build to it from the first template rather than auditing at the end.

What that means in practice

Structure

Pages are made of real HTML. Headings run in order, landmarks mark out the regions, lists are lists, and buttons are buttons. A screen reader gets a document it can navigate.

Keyboard

Anything you can click, you can reach and operate with a keyboard alone. The focus outline stays visible so you always know where you are, and the skip link at the top of every page jumps you past the menu straight into the content.

Contrast and type

Text meets AA contrast against whatever sits behind it, photographs included. Scale the text to 200% or zoom the page to 400% and the layout holds together with every word still readable.

Motion

The site animates on purpose. Switch on reduce motion in your operating system and all of it stops.

Images

Product photos and illustrations carry alt text that describes them. Decorative marks are hidden from assistive technology so they stay out of your way.

Shopping

The size finder, the coaster set builder and the cart are all operated by clicking or tapping. Nothing here asks you to drag.

How we check it

Automated tools catch the easy problems and miss the interesting ones, so we run both kinds of test. Results from the last full audit:

  • axe across seven page types: zero violations.
  • 461 buttons, links and fields read from the browser accessibility tree, every one with a name.
  • 517 focus stops: none landing hidden behind the sticky header.
  • The layout at 320 by 256 pixels, which is what 400% zoom leaves you, with no sideways scrolling and nothing cut off.
  • Text scaled to 200%: nothing clipped.
  • 164 images on the home page: none missing alt text.
Automated tools cannot judge text sitting on a photograph, because they need a solid colour behind it to measure against. We check those by sampling the pixels actually behind the words.

Where our control ends

Checkout runs on Shopify's own hosted pages. Payment services such as PayPal and Shop Pay hand you off to their sites too. Those pages sit outside our theme and we cannot change them. Tell us anyway if you hit a barrier there, and we will raise it with Shopify.

Found a barrier?

Email lapphunddesigns@gmail.com and tell us what happened and what you were using: the browser, the screen reader, the phone, whatever seems relevant. We read every message ourselves and reply within a business day.

Anyone who takes the time to report a barrier is doing us a favour, and we treat it that way.
