I am Jill, and together with my husband and our two Finnish Lapphunds, Timber and Tundra, we built Lapphund Designs in Castlegar, British Columbia, surrounded by the mountains and rivers our Lappies were born to roam.
When we brought Timber home, we went looking for gifts and gear that truly celebrated the breed and found almost nothing. So we made our own. Every design is breed-true, drawn from the real Finnish Lapphund: the fox-like face, the thick double coat, the curled tail and that famous smile.
Today Lapphund Designs is a home for the whole Lappy Pack. Whether you are a proud Finnish Lapphund owner or simply love the breed, we would love to have you along for the adventure.
A Finnish Lapphund tail curls gracefully over their back, acting like a natural scarf when they sleep in the snow.
Thousands of years of loyalty, floof, and adventure
The Sámi people of Lapland — spanning northern Finland, Sweden, and Norway — begin keeping dogs as hunting companions and camp guardians in the harsh Arctic wilderness.
Tap for a fun factArchaeological digs in Lapland have uncovered dog remains dating back to 7000 BCE, and ancient cave drawings depict dogs remarkably similar to today's Finnish Lapphund!
Tap to flip backAs the Sámi shift from nomadic hunting to semi-nomadic reindeer herding, their dogs evolve too — becoming skilled herders trained to move massive reindeer herds with a sharp, commanding bark.
Tap for a fun factSámi reindeer herds numbered up to half a million animals and migrated up to 3,000 miles seasonally. The dogs were bred over thousands of years specifically to develop a powerful, distinctive bark to control the herds.
Tap to flip backThe Finnish Kennel Club establishes the first breed standard, calling them 'Lapponian Shepherd Dogs.' Both long-coated and short-coated varieties are initially grouped together as one breed.
Tap for a fun factWorld War II devastated much of Lapland, but dedicated breeders managed to save enough dogs to keep the breed alive. The first official standard in 1945 was a turning point that sparked serious preservation efforts.
Tap to flip backThe long-coated and short-coated varieties are officially split into two separate breeds: the Finnish Lapphund (Lapinkoira) and the Lapponian Herder (Lapinporokoira).
Tap for a fun factA survey of herding dogs from 1959 to 1961 revealed two clearly distinct types working alongside the reindeer. The long-coated 'floofy' ones became our beloved Finnish Lapphunds!
Tap to flip backThe FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) grants official international recognition. Breed clubs begin forming across Europe, Australia, and North America.
Tap for a fun factThe Finnish Lapphund's DNA contains a unique mitochondrial sub-clade (d1) found only in northern Scandinavian breeds, linking them to an ancient wolf-dog hybridization — making them one of the most genetically distinctive breeds on Earth.
Tap to flip backRanked among Finland's most popular breeds, Finnish Lapphunds are now cherished family companions worldwide — celebrated for their loyalty, intelligence, and legendary floof.
Tap for a fun factIn 2005, the Finnish Lapphund became the third most popular breed in all of Finland! The AKC granted full recognition in 2011, placing them in the Herding Group — a nod to their ancient working heritage.
